Women of color are still underrepresented in the highest ranks of leadership within most organizations. This underrepresentation is not necessarily due to a lack of qualified women of color to fulfil leadership positions but is often due to sociohistorical and institutional barriers women of color face as they try to ascend to leadership positions. If we are to correct this disparity, woman of color, allies, and organizations alike must purposefully provide adequate support for women of color who aspire to leadership positions. In this presentation, I will provide research-based strategies for individuals and organizations based on my study of six women executives from the federal sector.
